The hike I'm going to document here is a short return climb up Mt Finlayson, a hill near Victoria in BC, Canada. But let's imagine you want to make it a bit more interesting. It will plot a little 2D map for you and enable you to share that information. Once you've finished your activity (Strava runs in the background, so you can continue to use your phone to take pictures etc), save the activity. Strava auto-pauses when you're not moving. After you have selected the files, click the blue upload button. To pick and choose files, hold down the Command key (mac) or Control key (PC) and then click-select multiple files. To select multiple files in sequence, use the shift key. Hit record, and select either Running or Cycling (use 'Running' if you're going on a hike there is no minimum pace required). If your TCX or GPX files are too big, ZIP them. You'll need to download it for your GPS-enabled device, and log in (email or through social media). Strava is a free app available for Android or iPhone. Because that's what I use, I'm going to stick with Strava for this instructable.

If you don't have a standalone GPS, that's fine, I don't either - just use your phone and an app such as Strava (there are doubtless dozens of others suggestions welcome! So far, AllTrails has been shown to work well, thanks Troy for the tip). You also need to record that hike using a GPS-enabled device. Preserve waypoint colors and symbols (e.g.preferably, one involving some vertical ascending and descending for maximum 3D interest.

Show track statistics (distance, time, elevation): Segment break threshold for plain-text track data: secondsĪdd artificial timestamps (e.g., for OSM or Garmin Connect): Preserve track styles in input files (e.g., from KML or Garmin GPX): Threshold (in meters) for re-ordering/merging tracks: (GPSBabel also has a wider range of output formats.)

Non-compatible formats: If this conversion program cannot read your file, it's possible that GPSBabel will be able to.

Leaflet/Google Maps: To generate an HTML map, use the Leaflet or Google Maps form.

Google Earth: If you want to generate a KML or KMZ file for Google Earth, use the Google Earth mapping form.

If, however, you have ZIP codes, postal codes, or cities & states, this form is the right tool to use - but be sure to include a valid header row! (See the waypoint tutorial for more info.)

Addresses: If you want to find the coordinates of a list of street addresses, it may be easier to use the geocoding utilities.
